The European bison is a beautiful and majestic species that perfectly belongs to the wild landscapes of Slovakia. These iconic animals inhabit a relatively well-defined territory, allowing experts to accurately identify their home range, seasonal movement patterns, and the routes they regularly use throughout the year.
Female European bison give birth to a calf approximately once every two years, contributing to the slow but steady growth of the population. Today, the European bison population in Slovakia numbers around 80 individuals, living in two distinct herds. Adult bulls can weigh between 530 and 920 kilograms, while females are noticeably smaller. Each herd is led by an experienced cow, typically the oldest and most knowledgeable member. In the wild, European bison can live up to 35 years, making them a long-lived and fascinating symbol of Slovakia’s natural heritage.
